Reasons To Love The Fishing Paradise @ Kodiak, Alaska
If you
are a fishing enthusiast, Kodiak, Alaska is the place for you. There is no
doubt that Kodiak is a fishing paradise because there are vast areas for salt
water and fresh water fishing, whether you’re a hook-and-line/angler type or
the ‘deadliest catch’ kind. One website best described Kodiak this way, “Think
of it as the old anglers' quandary – so much water, so many fish, so little
time – but on a wilder, grander scale (http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=fishingSport.main).”
Park and go fishing in Kodiak, Alaska. |
Anglers can choose between two zones to fish in Kodiak: the
road system and the remote system. Kodiak has a road system that comprises
about 100 miles of well-paved roads. These roads lead to streams, rivers, lakes
and oceans that teem with fish. These road systems are not only easy to reach,
they are cheap, too. You can just park and go fishing, no fees (above). These
bodies of water hold all kinds of salmon: silver, red, and king salmon. They
also have Dolly Varden, rainbow trout and landlocked coho. Trina is shown
while fishing in one of the streams (below).

In the remote system, “one can pay for the package, via a
float-plane and often include meals, guides, and boat opportunity. These
destinations can put the angler on superlative fisheries in majestic
surroundings (http://www.outdoorsdirectory.com/areas/fishing/southcentral/kodiak.htm).”
If you go remote fishing, there is a great chance that you will encounter the
famous ‘Alaskan bear’. Moreover, there is a high probability of encountering a
salmon run. More importantly, those seeking a trophy rainbow or steelhead trout,
have all the chances of success once you go remote fishing in Kodiak.
Open ocean fishing in Alaska. |
As
marine majors, Trina’s friends had great opportunities to fish in the open ocean
(above). But to conserve and protect its resources, the Alaska government
encourages sports fishermen the ‘catch and release’ practice. And of course, one
must also get a license before one can fish. Fishing gears are available in
some stores should you wish to buy your gears in Kodiak.
Fish processing in the laboratory. |
Often, Trina and her friends caught halibut which they brought
back to the laboratory (above) for processing and their apartments for eating . In
Alaska, whatever you catch, make sure that you know how to handle your fish
well.
Kodiak is still one of the lesser disturbed areas that are
abundant in natural forests, rich vegetation, and clean bodies of water that
are home to an angler’s dream of fish species. Devout sport fishing aficionados
must add Kodiak in their bucket list and visit this island at least, once in
their lifetime.
